Detailed Description of Piece - Redware Crock with Bird on Black
Redware pottery was extremely influential during early America; this style was introduced by German immigrants during the 17th century. In my workshop, each piece is made and painted by hand. Modern machinery is not used to produce the final product and the tools (e.g., American style stand up wheels, square chip, pin tool, wire, fettling knife, etc.) are similar to those used by early American potters. All of the slips used are my own formulas and are food, oven, microwave and dishwasher safe. Our redware is made and painted by hand using brushwork in most cases, but we also incorporate slip trail and scraffito techniques. Although the styles are reminiscent of early redware, the colors tend to be more vibrant and our designs more varied.
In this piece, Redware Crock with Bird on Black, a classical early American shape has been decorated with a design influenced by Ukrainian patterns - a reflection of the diversity which has helped to shape American art and culture. The design is applied by brush only and the depth of color in this design (e.g., feathers & floral) has been created by adjusting thickness of slips and overlaying different slips on top of each other to create the desired effect.
